KNUST Basic JHS Wins the 4th Edition of JSMQ

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Basic JHS has emerged as the winner of the fourth edition of the Junior Science and Mathematics Quiz (JSMQ). The intense competition held at the Grand Finale featured three schools: KNUST Basic JHS, Manna International School, and Barbara International School.

In his welcome address, Professor Leonard Amekudzi, the Provost of the College of Science, noted that the regionals lasted for 3 months, from Tamale to Takoradi to greater Accra and to Kumasi, for the nationals, of which more than 100 schools have been involved in the programme. Professor Amekudzi congratulated the three outstanding schools that successfully advanced to the national stage: Barbara International School, Manna International School, and KNUST Basic JHS.

Professor Kwasi Preko, the Board Chair of JSMQ, expressed his enthusiasm for the transformative impact of the competition on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. He noted that the JSMQ seeks to achieve a relentless pursuit of knowledge that knows no bounds, and as such, he emphasised the programme's dedication to breaking down barriers in STEM subjects and encouraged perseverance among schools that did not reach the finals. Professor Preko acknowledged the broader impact of the quiz, citing past contestants excelling in their academic pursuits, such as Master Stephen Kofi Ampemah from Opoku Ware School, who shone in the National Science and Math Quiz. He thanked all the sponsors for their support so far and called on all institutions to sponsor the programme for it to improve.

At the end of the competition, KNUST Basic JHS received a cash prize of 5,000 GH, a trophy, certificates, and a laptop for each student and trainer. The team comprised Jason Antwi Agyei, Kwadwo Asamoah, Caleb Kumankuma, and the only female, Nana Ama Serwaa. Manna International School, the 1st runner-up, secured a cash prize of 3,000 GH and laptops for their students, while Barbara International School, the third runner-up, received 2,000 GH. Jason Antwi Agyei earned recognition as the overall STEM Champion, and Pearl Elise Ayerakwa from Global Community School was awarded as the Best-Performing Female contestant.

Other awards were bestowed, including the Fastest Brain, Fastest Finger Award to Best Brain, the Decoding the Clues Award to Kyere Educational Complex, the Global Nobel Prize to Kyere Educational Complex, the Innovative Project Award to Belhaven Montessori, and the Teacher Mentorship Awards to distinguished coaches of KNUST Basic JHS, including Mr. Richard Obeng, Mr. Oteng Yeboah, Mr. Lambert Nakpi, Mr. Sampson Agyei Donkor, Mr. Kwaku Amoani, and Mr. Stephen Forson. The quiz was successfully moderated by Dr. (Mrs.) Aufgustina Angelina Slverken, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Theoretical and Applied Biology.

The programme ended with solidarity messages from sponsors and partners: Eridec Ghana, Dext Technologies, Kessben TV, Multicredit Savings and Loan, Pizzaman Chicken Man, and Multinet.
