KNUST's JSMQ Partners with Dext Technology to Train JHS Students Nationwide in STEM

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), through its flagship programme, the Junior Science and Maths Quiz (JSMQ) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dext Technology Limited to train Junior High School (J.H.S) students nationwide in STEM. The ceremony took place on the 2nd of May 2024 at the Council Chamber, KNUST.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dext Technology Limited, Mr. Charles Ofori Antipem, hinted that, in addition, the MOU will train basic schoolteachers in STEM with the right skill and capacity to enable the youth to catch up with the technological pace of the 21st century. According to him, training science teachers is a crucial aspect of STEM education, as it effectively prepares the next generation of scientists.

The Board Chair of JSMQ, Professor Kwasi Preko, revealed that the training sessions will be district-based, catering to  private and public basic school headteachers and science facilitators. The goal is to equip these educators with the tools and knowledge to inspire and educate students in STEM subjects.

Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, expressed excitement about the additional initiative to train science teachers. She stressed the importance of preparing the youth for the technological advancing world, stating, "With our formula 'catch them young', we believe that we can train the future in our hands." She also called on institutions and companies to support this noble cause of training our youth and their teachers in STEM.

Present at the meeting were Mr. Yaw Owusu-Asamoah, Deputy Registrar, Human Resources Division; Professor Jerry John Kponyo, Dean of the Quality Assurance and Planning Office; Mrs. Regina Nuako, Deputy Registrar, General Administration; Dr. (Mrs.) Augustina Angelina Sylverken, Quiz Mistress of JSMQ and Senior Lecturer, Department of Theoretical and Applied Biology; Dr. Akyana Britwum, Board Member of JSMQ and Lecturer, Department of Physics; and Ms. Anita Akua Kyerewaa Kuma, Senior Assistant Registrar, URO.

Accompanying Mr. Antipem from Dext Technology Limited were Mr. Michael Asante Afrifa, Chief Operating Officer; Mr. Caleb Fugah, Director of Strategy; Mawuli Amedofu, Supply Chain and Finance; and Sandra Owusu, Technical Associate.
